Priest gearing separates into two healing approaches and one damage role. Discipline prepares for damage with absorbs, Holy responds with a broader healing toolkit, and Shadow deals spell damage. The same cloth piece can serve more than one specialization, but its value changes with the job it must perform.

Discipline: measure prevention as well as healing
Discipline’s Power Word: Shield prevents damage before it lands. Spell power improves the strength of its healing and shields, making it a direct contributor to the specialization’s main task.
Haste helps with casting and the global cooldown, but its value depends on talents, raid buffs and which spells are used most often. A Discipline Priest frequently applying shields should not assume that every additional point of haste has the same practical value as it does for a Priest casting longer heals.
Critical strike benefits parts of the healing toolkit, including interactions associated with Divine Aegis, but Power Word: Shield itself is not simply a normal critical-heal cast. Judge crit within the whole healing pattern rather than expecting it to improve every shield in the same way as spell power.
Mana matters when the encounter is long enough to test it. Intellect and regeneration can keep shield coverage reliable over the full fight; excessive sustain in a short fight may instead be traded for more healing or absorb output.
Holy: choose gear for the healing being assigned
Holy uses direct healing and raid healing tools, so haste can make a substantial difference to how quickly it answers incoming damage. Spell power strengthens the heals themselves. The balance between speed, output and mana depends on whether the Priest is covering a raid, helping with tank healing or handling frequent emergency damage.
Spirit and intellect can contribute to sustain, but a stat that improves mana efficiency does not automatically prevent a death during a burst window. Likewise, the fastest possible cast pattern is not useful if it cannot be maintained through the fight.
Holy trinkets should be chosen with the assignment in mind. A regeneration effect helps on long fights with genuine mana pressure; a throughput effect can offer more value when dangerous damage arrives in predictable waves.
Shadow: hit and spell damage come first
Shadow’s damaging spells need enough hit to land reliably against raid bosses. The amount required from gear depends on the character’s talents and raid composition. Check that requirement before replacing a hit item with one that has more haste or critical strike.
Spell power strengthens Shadow’s damage. Haste changes the pace of casting and contributes to damage over time performance in WotLK, while critical strike has value that depends on the spells and talents involved. The strongest secondary stat on one character’s current set may not produce the same gain on another set with different hit and tier pieces.
A healing cloth item may have a high item level and still be a poor Shadow upgrade if it sacrifices offensive stats. Conversely, a Shadow item with useful spell power can be a temporary healing piece, but that does not make it optimal for either healing specialization.
Shared slots require separate decisions
Priests can use similar weapons, rings, cloaks and trinkets across their specializations. Shared access does not mean shared BiS. Discipline may value stronger absorbs, Holy may need faster or more sustainable healing, and Shadow must account for spell hit and damage.
Tier bonuses make this especially important. Before replacing a tier item, compare the completed set for the specialization that will wear it. An off-set piece with better visible stats can still perform worse after the set bonus is lost.
Build each Priest set around its raid responsibility. A good upgrade is the piece that improves that responsibility over the full encounter, whether the result appears as prevented damage, timely healing or reliable Shadow DPS.
