Frost Death Knight is a dual-wield melee DPS specialization focused on Obliterate, Frost Strike, Killing Machine and Rime procs. Its damage comes from strong physical strikes combined with Frost damage, while Blood of the North allows Blood Runes to be converted into Death Runes for additional Obliterates. Good Frost gameplay depends on disease uptime, efficient Rune usage and reacting correctly to procs without wasting Runic Power.

Priority list:
Stats and gearing
Frost receives 3% melee Hit from Nerves of Cold Steel while dual wielding.
This means approximately 5% Hit from gear is enough to reach the 8% melee special-attack cap.
Additional Hit still improves dual-wield auto-attacks and spell Hit, so Hit beyond the special cap is not completely wasted.
26 Expertise is the dodge soft cap. Attack from behind the boss whenever possible to prevent parries and remove dodges through Expertise.
Strength is the primary damage stat after important Hit and Expertise requirements.
Armor Penetration becomes extremely strong at high gear levels because Obliterate and auto-attacks deal physical damage. The hard cap is 1400 Armor Penetration Rating.
Frost Strike and Howling Blast deal Frost damage and do not benefit from Armor Penetration, so reaching the cap should come from an appropriate high-end gear setup rather than sacrificing excessive Strength.
Around 38% Critical Strike is a useful high-end reference. Frost gains additional value from Crit through strong Obliterate scaling and Guile of Gorefiend.
Weapon setup
Frost is designed around dual wielding.
Use two slow one-handed weapons with high weapon damage whenever possible.
Slow weapons increase the damage of weapon-based abilities and provide stronger individual melee attacks.
Nerves of Cold Steel improves off-hand damage and Hit while dual wielding, making the second weapon a major part of the specialization rather than simply an additional source of auto-attacks.
Weapon quality is particularly important because Obliterate and other physical attacks scale directly with weapon damage.
Diseases
Keep Frost Fever and Blood Plague active at all times.
Apply them initially with:
Icy Touch → Plague Strike.
Diseases increase Obliterate damage and activate several Frost talents that improve damage against diseased targets.
Once both diseases are established, Glyph of Disease allows Pestilence to refresh them instead of repeatedly spending Frost and Unholy Runes on Icy Touch and Plague Strike.
This is important because preserving those Runes allows more Obliterate casts.
Do not allow either disease to expire during normal sustained combat.
Single-target priority
Frost uses a priority system built around Rune availability and procs.
A practical priority is:
Maintain Frost Fever and Blood Plague → Obliterate → Killing Machine Frost Strike → Rime Howling Blast → Frost Strike to prevent Runic Power capping → Pestilence to refresh diseases → Blood Strike to convert Blood Runes → Horn of Winter during empty globals.
Frost and Unholy Runes should normally be spent on Obliterate.
Blood Runes are used to refresh diseases through Pestilence and to activate Blood of the North through Blood Strike.
Runic Power is spent primarily on Frost Strike.
Always prioritize spending important Runes before using unnecessary Runic Power globals if delaying the Rune ability would reduce Rune regeneration efficiency.
Obliterate
Obliterate is the main single-target Rune ability.
Use it whenever a Frost Rune and Unholy Rune are available and diseases are safely maintained.
Annihilation prevents Obliterate from consuming diseases, allowing repeated use without rebuilding Frost Fever and Blood Plague.
Obliterate deals physical damage and benefits strongly from weapon damage and Armor Penetration.
Glyph of Obliterate increases Obliterate damage by 25%, making it one of the core Frost glyphs.
Maximizing the number of Obliterates used during an encounter is one of the most important parts of Frost DPS.
Killing Machine
Killing Machine procs from melee attacks and guarantees a critical strike for an eligible Frost ability.
On a single target, Killing Machine should normally be consumed by Frost Strike.
Do not automatically spend a Killing Machine proc on Howling Blast during single-target combat if Frost Strike can use it effectively.
The main exception is when a Rime proc needs to be consumed immediately before the next Obliterate or when Howling Blast can damage multiple important targets.
Killing Machine becomes much more valuable for Howling Blast during AoE because one guaranteed critical cast can hit the entire pack.
Rime
Obliterate has a chance to trigger Rime.
Rime resets the cooldown of Howling Blast and allows the next Howling Blast to be cast without consuming Runes.
Use these free Howling Blast casts without delaying important Obliterates.
On a single target, Killing Machine is generally better spent on Frost Strike, but a combined Rime and Killing Machine proc can still be valuable when the proc must be cleared before another Obliterate.
During AoE, Rime becomes extremely powerful because free Howling Blast casts provide immediate damage to multiple enemies.
Avoid sitting on Rime for too long because another proc cannot provide full value while the previous one remains unused.
Frost Strike
Frost Strike is the main Runic Power spender.
Use it during Rune downtime and whenever Runic Power is approaching the cap.
Glyph of Frost Strike reduces its Runic Power cost, allowing more Frost Strikes over the course of an encounter.
Killing Machine should normally be consumed by Frost Strike during single-target combat.
Do not spam Frost Strike so aggressively that Rune abilities are delayed.
Runes continue regenerating while abilities are being used, so wasting available Rune cycles generally costs more damage than holding some Runic Power briefly.
Blood Runes and Blood of the North
Blood of the North causes Blood Strike and Pestilence to convert Blood Runes into Death Runes when they reactivate.
Death Runes can substitute for any Rune type.
The main goal is to synchronize the two Blood Runes so that they become two Death Runes together.
Those two Death Runes can then be paired for an additional Obliterate.
A typical cycle uses one Blood Rune on Pestilence to refresh diseases and the other on Blood Strike.
Avoid letting the two Blood Runes drift far apart because synchronized Death Runes make the rotation much easier to manage.
Pestilence and Glyph of Disease
Glyph of Disease causes Pestilence to refresh Frost Fever and Blood Plague on the primary target.
This allows disease maintenance for the cost of one Blood Rune instead of spending an additional Frost Rune and Unholy Rune.
Refresh diseases close to expiration rather than using Pestilence unnecessarily early.
The same ability spreads diseases to nearby enemies, making it useful for both single-target maintenance and multi-target combat.
Efficient Pestilence timing is important because every Frost and Unholy Rune preserved can become another Obliterate.
Unbreakable Armor
Unbreakable Armor is the main Frost offensive cooldown.
It increases Strength for 20 seconds and has a short one-minute cooldown.
Use it frequently enough to gain the maximum number of activations during the encounter.
Blood Tap can provide the Death Rune needed to activate Unbreakable Armor without disrupting the normal Frost and Unholy Rune cycle.
A common burst sequence is:
Blood Tap → Unbreakable Armor → continue with Obliterate and Frost Strike priority.
Combine Unbreakable Armor with strong trinket procs, Potion of Speed, Hyperspeed Accelerators or other offensive effects when doing so does not cost an additional use later in the fight.
Blood Tap
Blood Tap immediately activates a Blood Rune and converts it into a Death Rune temporarily.
For Frost, its primary offensive use is enabling Unbreakable Armor without sacrificing an important Obliterate cycle.
Glyph of Blood Tap removes the health cost, making the ability easier to use safely.
Plan Blood Tap around Unbreakable Armor instead of activating it randomly whenever a Rune is unavailable.
Empower Rune Weapon
Empower Rune Weapon immediately refreshes all Runes and grants additional Runic Power.
Use it after the current Rune set has already been spent.
Activating it while several Runes are still available wastes a large part of the cooldown.
During a strong burst window, Empower Rune Weapon can provide several additional Obliterates while Unbreakable Armor and other offensive effects are active.
Remember to spend the additional Runic Power before reaching the cap.
Blood Presence
Blood Presence is the normal DPS presence.
Its 15% increased damage affects the entire damage profile and provides more sustained value than the alternatives.
Use Unholy Presence only for specific utility, such as faster movement or certain pre-pull situations.
Frost Presence is defensive and should only be used when survival or temporary tanking is more important than damage.
Avoid unnecessary Presence switching because it consumes a Rune resource and disrupts the damage cycle.
Horn of Winter
Keep Horn of Winter active when its Strength and Agility buff is not already covered by an equivalent raid effect.
Horn of Winter also generates 10 Runic Power.
Use it during an empty global when no important Rune ability, Frost Strike or proc needs immediate attention.
It should not replace a damaging ability merely because its cooldown is available.
AoE
Frost has powerful burst AoE through Howling Blast.
Start by applying Frost Fever and Blood Plague to one enemy and spread them with Pestilence.
Then prioritize Howling Blast.
A practical AoE priority is:
Icy Touch → Plague Strike → Pestilence → Howling Blast → Rime Howling Blast → Blood Boil with spare Blood Runes → Frost Strike during Rune downtime.
Killing Machine gains additional value when consumed by Howling Blast against several enemies.
Death and Decay can be useful on very large stationary packs, but Howling Blast and disease spreading remain the core of Frost AoE.
Keep auto-attacking so Killing Machine continues to proc even during heavy AoE.
Anti-Magic Shell
Anti-Magic Shell absorbs magic damage and can convert absorbed damage into Runic Power.
Use it before predictable magic damage.
A well-timed Anti-Magic Shell can provide enough Runic Power for additional Frost Strikes while simultaneously reducing incoming damage.
It can also prevent many harmful magical effects from being applied.
Use unavoidable or safe encounter damage for extra Runic Power rather than intentionally standing in dangerous mechanics.
Movement and utility
Maintain melee uptime whenever possible.
Every second away from the target loses auto-attacks, Killing Machine opportunities and Runic Power generation.
Use Nitro Boosts for large repositioning when available.
Death Grip can bring eligible enemies into melee range or reposition important adds.
Chains of Ice provides powerful movement control.
Mind Freeze is the primary interrupt and becomes free with Endless Winter.
Use utility when required even if it briefly interrupts the damage priority.
Army of the Dead and Raise Dead
Army of the Dead is best used before the pull or during encounter downtime because of its long channel.
The summoned ghouls scale with the Attack Power and Haste present when Army is cast.
Avoid channeling Army during normal boss uptime unless the encounter provides a period where no other damage can be dealt.
Raise Dead provides another temporary Ghoul and can be combined with offensive cooldowns.
When using temporary pets, summon them during strong stat windows when possible so they gain maximum value.
Glyph of Obliterate
Glyph of Obliterate increases Obliterate damage by 25%.
Obliterate is the core Rune ability of the specialization, making this a direct increase to one of the largest parts of single-target damage.
Glyph of Disease
Glyph of Disease allows Pestilence to refresh Frost Fever and Blood Plague on the primary target.
This saves Frost and Unholy Runes that would otherwise be spent reapplying diseases.
Those preserved Runes can instead be used for additional Obliterates.
Correct Pestilence timing is therefore essential to gaining the full value from the glyph.
Glyph of Frost Strike
Glyph of Frost Strike reduces the Runic Power cost of Frost Strike.
This allows more Frost Strikes over the course of an encounter and makes Runic Power easier to manage.
It is particularly useful during high-Haste periods where faster melee attacks increase Runic Power generation.
Consumables and cooldown timing
Flask of Endless Rage provides consistent Attack Power.
Dragonfin Filet provides Strength, while Fish Feast is a convenient general raid food.
Potion of Speed is the standard offensive potion.
Using one shortly before combat allows another potion during the encounter.
Use the second Potion of Speed during a strong damage window with Unbreakable Armor, trinket effects and uninterrupted boss uptime.
Hyperspeed Accelerators provide another controllable Haste effect and can be aligned with Unbreakable Armor.
Stack offensive cooldowns when practical, but do not delay a one-minute Unbreakable Armor so long that an entire additional activation is lost.
