Mage Arcane PVE Guide

Arcane Mage is a burst-oriented ranged DPS specialization built around Arcane Blast, Missile Barrage and Arcane Missiles. Its main challenge is not maintaining DoTs or reacting to many different abilities, but deciding how aggressively to spend Mana while getting maximum value from Arcane Blast stacks and powerful cooldown combinations.

Stats and gearing

Reach 8% Hit, or approximately 210 Hit Rating, when 3/3 Arcane Focus and 3/3 Precision provide 6% Hit and Misery or Improved Faerie Fire supplies another 3%.

Against a level-83 raid boss, the total spell Hit requirement is 17%. Without the 3% raid spell-Hit debuff, the same talent setup requires 11% Hit from gear, or approximately 289 Hit Rating. A Draenei in the party reduces the requirement by another 1%.

Spell Power is the strongest general throughput stat after Hit. 3100+ Spell Power provides a strong high-end reference and directly improves Arcane Blast, Arcane Missiles and the rest of the offensive toolkit.

Haste is extremely valuable because Arcane spends most of its time casting or channeling. 1100+ Haste provides a strong late-game target rather than a hard cap. Additional Haste continues to improve casting throughput until temporary effects begin pushing spells against the 1-second global-cooldown limit.

Critical Strike remains useful, particularly because Arcane Missiles receives strong critical-strike scaling through its glyph. Spirit also provides offensive value through Molten Armor and Glyph of Molten Armor.

Arcane Blast

Arcane Blast is the primary single-target spell.

Each cast applies a stacking effect that increases Arcane damage by 15% while increasing the Mana cost of subsequent Arcane Blasts by 175%. The effect stacks up to four times.

This creates the central Arcane tradeoff: additional Arcane Blasts at four stacks deal excellent damage but consume Mana extremely quickly.

Build Arcane Blast stacks aggressively when Mana and cooldowns allow it. During longer fights, use Missile Barrage and Arcane Missiles to reset the stacks before the increased Mana cost becomes unsustainable.

Do not treat four stacks as a command to immediately stop casting Arcane Blast every time. When Mana is plentiful, continuing with another Arcane Blast while waiting for Missile Barrage can produce more damage.

Missile Barrage

Missile Barrage changes Arcane Missiles from a slow channel into the ideal spell for consuming Arcane Blast stacks.

The proc removes the Mana cost of Arcane Missiles and reduces its channel time by 2.5 seconds.

If Missile Barrage appears during the first few Arcane Blast casts, continue building toward four Arcane Blast stacks before consuming the proc.

A simple and reliable cycle is:

Arcane Blast ×4 → Missile Barrage Arcane Missiles → repeat.

More aggressive play can continue casting Arcane Blast beyond four stacks when Missile Barrage has not yet activated and sufficient Mana remains.

If Mana must be preserved, reset the stacks sooner instead of repeatedly paying the enormous four-stack Arcane Blast cost.

Arcane Missiles

Arcane Missiles is primarily used together with Missile Barrage.

Casting it after building Arcane Blast stacks allows the missiles to benefit from the increased Arcane damage before the stacks are removed.

Glyph of Arcane Missiles increases the critical-strike damage bonus of Arcane Missiles by 25%, making critical missile channels considerably stronger.

Do not interrupt Arcane Missiles before the final missile lands unless an encounter mechanic makes movement mandatory.

After the channel ends, immediately begin rebuilding Arcane Blast stacks.

Burn and Mana conservation

Arcane damage depends heavily on how quickly you are willing to spend Mana.

During a burst window, remain at four Arcane Blast stacks longer and continue casting Arcane Blast aggressively. This produces much higher damage but consumes Mana extremely quickly.

During a more conservative period, use Missile Barrage Arcane Missiles soon after reaching four stacks and avoid unnecessary additional four-stack Arcane Blasts.

Fight length determines how aggressive you can be.

A short boss fight allows far more Arcane Blast spam because Mana remaining when the boss dies has no value. A longer encounter requires enough restraint to reach the next Mana Sapphire and Evocation without being forced into weak casting because the Mana pool was exhausted too early.

The goal is not to finish every encounter with a large reserve. Spend Mana aggressively enough that your regeneration tools allow you to continue dealing strong damage until the boss dies.

Arcane Power

Arcane Power increases spell damage by 20% while also increasing spell Mana cost by 20%.

This makes it extremely powerful during an aggressive Arcane Blast window, but it also accelerates Mana consumption.

Enter Arcane Power with enough Mana to maintain heavy casting for its full duration.

Combine it with other offensive effects when encounter timing allows, including Icy Veins, trinket procs, Hyperspeed Accelerators, Bloodlust/Heroism and an offensive potion.

Do not activate Arcane Power immediately before forced movement, target immunity or another mechanic that prevents uninterrupted casting.

Because Arcane Power has a relatively short cooldown, using it early enough to gain another activation is often more valuable than holding it for too long.

Icy Veins

When included in the talent build, Icy Veins increases spell casting speed by 20% for 20 seconds.

It combines naturally with Arcane Power for an extremely strong burst window.

Be aware of very large Haste combinations. Bloodlust/Heroism, Icy Veins, Hyperspeed Accelerators and Potion of Speed can overlap heavily at high gear levels.

Haste still improves Arcane Missiles channeling and Arcane Blast casting, but portions of the benefit can be reduced once the global cooldown approaches its 1-second minimum.

This is why Potion of Wild Magic can become competitive with Potion of Speed during extremely Haste-heavy burst periods.

Mana Sapphire

Mana Sapphire is an offensive resource rather than only an emergency Mana button.

Use it early enough that additional charges can be used during a long encounter. Waiting until the Mana bar is almost completely empty can force an unnecessary reduction in Arcane Blast usage before the gem is activated.

A good Mana Sapphire use allows you to extend an aggressive four-stack Arcane Blast phase without immediately needing Evocation.

Plan the fight around available Mana Sapphire charges, Evocation and external Mana support rather than treating each resource separately.

Evocation

Evocation is the primary large Mana recovery cooldown.

Use it after a heavy Mana-burning phase when the restored Mana will allow another long period of aggressive Arcane Blast casting.

Because Evocation is channeled and deals no damage, encounter timing matters. Whenever possible, use it during a transition, reduced-damage period or another moment where losing direct casts is less costly.

Do not wait until absolutely zero Mana if doing so forces several seconds of weak or interrupted gameplay before Evocation can safely be used.

Likewise, avoid Evocation while enough Mana remains to continue an important Arcane Power, Bloodlust/Heroism or other major damage window.

Torment the Weak

Torment the Weak provides a major damage increase against targets affected by appropriate slowing effects.

Raid bosses can satisfy the requirement through common attack-speed slowing debuffs such as Thunder Clap, Frost Fever, Judgements of the Just or Infected Wounds.

This allows Arcane to benefit from Torment the Weak without personally casting Slow during normal raid combat.

Make sure the required effect is actually being maintained by the raid. Losing it directly reduces the damage of the primary Arcane spells.

Focus Magic

Focus Magic should be placed on a player who can provide frequent spell critical strikes.

The target receives 3% Critical Strike chance. Whenever that player critically strikes with a spell, the Mage receives 3% Critical Strike chance for 10 seconds.

A caster or healer with high and consistent spell-crit frequency is therefore usually a better target than a player whose spells crit only occasionally.

Keep the buff active after deaths or raid changes rather than forgetting to reapply it.

Presence of Mind

Presence of Mind makes the next eligible spell instant and also interacts with Arcane Potency to create additional Critical Strike potential.

An instant Arcane Blast can be useful during movement or during a planned burst sequence.

Do not use Presence of Mind simply because it is available if an upcoming movement mechanic would allow the instant cast to prevent otherwise unavoidable downtime.

It can also be used before an AoE spell such as Blizzard when the talent interaction and encounter make the additional burst valuable.

Movement

Arcane loses substantial damage during movement because Arcane Blast and Arcane Missiles require standing still.

Plan movement in advance whenever possible.

Presence of Mind can provide an instant Arcane Blast, while Arcane Barrage is an instant Arcane spell when the talent is available.

Fire Blast can also provide immediate damage while moving, although it is much weaker than maintaining the normal Arcane cycle.

Arcane Barrage removes Arcane Blast stacks, so using it during movement should be a deliberate decision rather than an automatic button press when high stacks are still valuable.

Blink and Nitro Boosts reduce the amount of time spent repositioning and allow Arcane Blast casting to resume sooner.

Mirror Image

Mirror Image provides additional damage and temporarily removes the Mage from the normal threat table.

It is particularly useful during the opening burst, where Arcane Power and repeated high-stack Arcane Blasts can create considerable threat.

Use Mirror Image when the summons can attack the target for most of their duration.

Avoid activating it immediately before the boss disappears, becomes immune or moves out of range.

AoE

Blizzard is the primary sustained ranged AoE spell for large groups.

Arcane Explosion provides instant close-range AoE and is particularly useful when enemies are already low health, when movement prevents a Blizzard channel or when the Mage is positioned inside the pack.

Presence of Mind can be used to create an instant cast in AoE situations and activate Arcane Potency for additional critical-strike potential.

Do not continue using expensive single-target Arcane Blast cycles when a large group of enemies can be damaged more efficiently through Blizzard.

For encounters containing one important boss and several low-priority adds, continue focusing the boss unless AoE damage is required by the encounter.

Molten Armor

Molten Armor is the normal offensive armor when Mana sustainability is under control.

It converts 35% of Spirit into Critical Strike Rating, and Glyph of Molten Armor adds another 20% of Spirit to that conversion.

This makes Spirit a real offensive stat on caster gear rather than a completely wasted attribute.

Mage Armor can provide additional Mana regeneration in unusually long or Mana-starved situations, but switching away from Molten Armor sacrifices offensive Critical Strike.

Glyph effects

Glyph of Arcane Blast increases the damage bonus provided by the Arcane Blast stacking effect by 3%, directly strengthening the specialization's central damage mechanic.

Glyph of Arcane Missiles increases the critical-strike damage bonus of Arcane Missiles by 25%, making Missile Barrage channels significantly stronger when they crit.

Glyph of Molten Armor increases the amount of Spirit converted into Critical Strike Rating by another 20%.

Together, the three glyphs strengthen Arcane Blast, Arcane Missiles and the passive Critical Strike scaling supplied by Molten Armor.

Consumables and cooldown timing

Flask of the Frost Wyrm provides consistent Spell Power throughout the encounter.

Potion of Speed provides a large temporary Haste increase and works well during aggressive Arcane Blast burst when the additional Haste can be used efficiently.

Potion of Wild Magic provides Spell Power and Critical Strike and becomes particularly attractive when other temporary Haste effects already push casting speed extremely high.

Using an offensive potion shortly before the pull allows another potion later in combat.

Hyperspeed Accelerators provide another controllable Haste effect and should be used during uninterrupted casting windows rather than before forced movement.

Arcane performs best when Arcane Power, Icy Veins, trinkets, Engineering effects and raid buffs are planned as burst windows instead of being activated randomly throughout the encounter.
