Priest Shadow PVE Guide

Shadow Priest deals sustained ranged damage through Vampiric Touch, Devouring Plague, Shadow Word: Pain and Mind Flay. Strong play depends on keeping DoTs active without unnecessary clipping, fitting Mind Blast into the correct windows and maintaining continuous casting while adapting to movement and multi-target situations.

Stats and gearing

Reach 11% Hit from gear, or 289 Hit Rating, when Shadow Focus and Misery are both present. With Heroic Presence from a Draenei in the group, the required amount drops to 10%, or 263 Hit Rating.

Spell Power is the main throughput stat once Hit is covered and should be increased as much as possible through gear, gems and enchants.

Haste is extremely valuable because Vampiric Touch, Devouring Plague and Mind Flay all benefit from it. The 1269 Haste target represents the gearing point used by this build. Until that value is reached, Reckless Ametrine provides Spell Power and Haste; after it is reached, Potent Ametrine shifts the yellow-socket value toward Spell Power and Critical Strike.

Critical Strike also scales well because Shadowform allows Vampiric Touch and Devouring Plague to crit, while Shadow Word: Pain can also critically strike. Crit additionally helps maintain the Spell Power bonus from Glyph of Shadow.

Spirit has offensive value through Twisted Faith and Glyph of Shadow, but it remains secondary to Hit, Spell Power and the Haste target.

Opening sequence

Begin with Vampiric Touch and Devouring Plague, then build Shadow Weaving before applying Shadow Word: Pain.

Mind Flay is an efficient way to build the remaining Shadow Weaving stacks. Once five stacks are active, apply Shadow Word: Pain so the DoT begins under the full Shadow damage bonus.

A practical opener is:

Vampiric Touch → Devouring Plague → Mind Blast → Mind Flay → Shadow Word: Pain

After Shadow Word: Pain is established, Pain and Suffering allows Mind Flay to refresh its duration, so it normally does not need to be manually recast during a continuous single-target fight.

DoT management

Vampiric Touch and Devouring Plague should remain active as consistently as possible.

Refresh Vampiric Touch so the new cast lands just after the previous effect expires. Refreshing too early removes part of the remaining DoT and wastes damage.

Devouring Plague is instant and can only be active on one target at a time. Its Improved Devouring Plague talent also causes immediate damage when it is applied, making it useful during movement when a refresh is already required.

Shadow Word: Pain is maintained differently. Once applied with five stacks of Shadow Weaving, normal Mind Flay usage refreshes it through Pain and Suffering.

Do not repeatedly spend global cooldowns manually refreshing Shadow Word: Pain while Mind Flay is already keeping it active.

Mind Blast and Mind Flay before 4-piece T10

Before obtaining the 4-piece Tier 10 bonus, Mind Blast remains an important part of the single-target priority.

Keep Vampiric Touch and Devouring Plague active, use Mind Blast when it is available and fill the remaining time with Mind Flay.

The general priority is:

Vampiric Touch → Devouring Plague → Mind Blast → Mind Flay

Shadow Word: Pain is added once during the opener and maintained through Mind Flay.

Mind Flay deals damage in three ticks. If you must interrupt the channel for a higher-priority spell or encounter mechanic, doing so immediately after a tick avoids wasting more of the channel than necessary.

4-piece T10 gameplay

The 4-piece Crimson Acolyte's Regalia bonus reduces the channel duration of Mind Flay by 0.5 seconds and reduces its tick interval by 0.17 seconds. This substantially increases the value of Mind Flay and changes the relative importance of Mind Blast.

With 4-piece T10 and high-end gear, Mind Flay becomes the dominant filler and Mind Blast can be used less aggressively than before the set bonus. This is why the talent setup can move points away from Improved Mind Blast after obtaining the set.

Continue using Mind Blast when it fits cleanly into the priority or when Replenishment needs to be triggered through Vampiric Touch, but do not force every Mind Blast cooldown if doing so delays DoT maintenance or stronger Mind Flay usage.

The core priority becomes:

Vampiric Touch → Devouring Plague → Mind Flay

with Mind Blast inserted when its damage, timing or Replenishment value makes the cast worthwhile.

Replenishment

Vampiric Touch enables Replenishment when Mind Blast hits an affected target.

Keep this interaction in mind when deciding whether to reduce Mind Blast usage after obtaining 4-piece T10. If another raid member already provides reliable Replenishment, the spell's raid-utility value is lower. If Shadow Priest is responsible for maintaining Replenishment, Mind Blast must still be used often enough to keep the effect available.

Do not sacrifice Vampiric Touch uptime simply to cast Mind Blast sooner.

Mind Flay

Mind Flay is the primary filler and becomes even more important after 4-piece T10.

Glyph of Mind Flay increases its damage by 10% while Shadow Word: Pain is active on the target, which is effectively the normal state once the opener is complete.

Because Mind Flay is channeled, timing matters. Avoid repeatedly canceling channels between ticks. If Vampiric Touch or Devouring Plague will expire shortly, plan the current channel so the higher-priority DoT can be refreshed cleanly.

High Haste and the Tier 10 bonus make the channel considerably faster, increasing the penalty for poor timing and unnecessary downtime.

Shadow Word: Death and movement

Shadow Word: Death is most useful when movement prevents you from casting Mind Flay, Mind Blast or Vampiric Touch.

Its instant cast makes it one of the few ways to continue dealing direct damage while repositioning, but the spell also damages the Priest when the target survives.

Devouring Plague can also be refreshed while moving when necessary because it is instant.

Plan movement around these instant abilities so that forced repositioning causes as little completely empty time as possible.

Dispersion can be used while moving when Mana or survival is more important than continuing to attack.

Shadowfiend and Mana

Shadowfiend provides significant Mana recovery while also contributing damage.

Use it early enough that the full Mana return is useful and the cooldown has a chance to become available again on a long encounter. Avoid summoning it immediately before the boss becomes untargetable or moves somewhere the pet cannot continue attacking.

Dispersion restores Mana while greatly reducing incoming damage. It can solve Mana problems, but using the full channel also stops your normal damage output.

When Mana allows it, save Dispersion for encounter mechanics where the defensive effect or forced downtime lets you recover Mana without sacrificing as much DPS.

AoE and multi-target damage

Mind Sear is the primary AoE channel.

It deals damage around the target you channel it on but does not damage that target itself. When one enemy has higher kill priority, channel Mind Sear on a different enemy so the priority target can still receive damage from other effects.

Glyph of Mind Sear increases its radius by 5 yards, making the spell easier to use against larger or more spread-out packs.

Against a few targets that will live for a significant amount of time, apply Vampiric Touch and Shadow Word: Pain to multiple enemies before using Mind Sear as filler.

Against large groups or enemies that will die quickly, spending globals applying several DoTs is less valuable. In those situations, begin channeling Mind Sear much earlier.

Devouring Plague remains limited to one target, so place it on the most important or longest-lived enemy.

Glyph effects

Glyph of Shadow converts Spirit into additional Spell Power for 10 seconds after a non-periodic spell critical strike while in Shadowform. Maintaining normal Mind Flay and Mind Blast activity provides regular opportunities to trigger the effect.

Glyph of Mind Flay increases Mind Flay damage by 10% whenever Shadow Word: Pain is active, strengthening the spell that already fills most open globals.

Glyph of Mind Sear increases the AoE radius by 5 yards. It does not increase single-target damage, but it makes Mind Sear more flexible on encounters with widely positioned adds or large trash packs.

Cooldowns and consumables

Potion of Wild Magic is the primary offensive potion because its temporary Spell Power and Critical Strike both benefit the Shadow damage profile.

Potion of Speed is another option when additional Haste can be fully used during a period of uninterrupted casting. Using a potion immediately before combat allows another potion later in the encounter.

Hyperspeed Accelerators add another controllable Haste window. Activate them when you can continuously cast rather than immediately before movement or a boss immunity phase.

Flask of the Frost Wyrm provides consistent Spell Power throughout the fight, while Fish Feast supplies a practical general caster food option.

Try to align temporary offensive effects with periods of high boss uptime rather than holding them so long that an additional use is lost.
