Warlock Destruction PVE Guide

Destruction Warlock is a direct-damage caster built around Immolate, Conflagrate, Chaos Bolt and Incinerate. Unlike the DoT-heavy Affliction playstyle, most of its damage comes from hard-hitting Fire spells, frequent Conflagrate burst and a powerful Imp that also interacts with Empowered Imp.

Weapon should be buffed with Firestone. Keep Fel Armor up on yourself. Play only with the Imp.

Opener

  1. Мy default, use Curse of Doom. Use Curse of the Elements only if nobody else in the raid provides that debuff and you are assigned to maintain it.
  2. Cast Immolate.
  3. Cast Conflagrate.
  4. Cast Chaos Bolt.
  5. Fill with Incinerate.

Priority

Stats and gearing

Reach 14% Hit, or 368 Hit Rating, when the raid provides the additional 3% spell Hit from Misery or Improved Faerie Fire. Without either effect, 17% Hit, or 446 Hit Rating, is required against a level-83 raid boss.

Spell Power is the strongest general throughput stat after Hit and should be increased as much as possible. 3100+ Spell Power provides a strong high-end reference for ICC-level gear.

Haste reduces the cast time of Immolate, Chaos Bolt and Incinerate. Around 1200 Haste provides strong late-game casting speed without representing a hard cap.

Critical Strike has particularly good synergy with Destruction because several talents reward critical hits, including Empowered Imp, Pyroclasm and Ruin. 40%+ Crit provides a strong high-end reference.

Spirit also provides offensive value through Fel Armor, but Hit, Spell Power, Haste and Critical Strike remain the main gearing concerns.

Single-target priority

Keep Immolate active at all times.

Use Conflagrate whenever it is available while Immolate is active.

Use Chaos Bolt on cooldown.

Fill all remaining casting time with Incinerate.

A simple priority is:

Immolate → Conflagrate → Chaos Bolt → Incinerate.

Use Curse of Doom when the target will remain alive long enough for the 60-second effect to complete. If the raid still needs Curse of the Elements, maintaining the raid debuff takes priority over personal Curse of Doom damage.

Immolate

Immolate is the foundation of the Destruction rotation.

Conflagrate requires your Immolate or Shadowflame effect on the target, while Incinerate also gains additional value against an Immolated enemy through Destruction talents.

Allow Immolate to remain active continuously, but avoid refreshing it significantly before expiration. Recasting too early wastes remaining periodic damage and consumes casting time that could have been spent on Incinerate.

Glyph of Conflagrate is essential because it prevents Conflagrate from consuming Immolate. Without the glyph, every Conflagrate would force much more frequent Immolate reapplication.

Glyph of Immolate increases Immolate's periodic damage by 10%, making it a strong personal-damage option.

Conflagrate

Conflagrate is one of the highest-priority abilities in the rotation.

It deals immediate Fire damage based on Immolate and then applies additional damage over six seconds. With Glyph of Conflagrate, the existing Immolate remains on the target.

Use Conflagrate on cooldown whenever Immolate is present.

Besides its own damage, Conflagrate activates Backdraft, making the next three eligible Destruction spells cast substantially faster.

This means a Conflagrate is not only an instant burst spell—it also accelerates the next part of the rotation.

Do not delay Conflagrate simply to finish several extra Incinerates. Keeping the ability cycling regularly provides more direct damage and more Backdraft windows.

Backdraft

Backdraft reduces the cast time and global cooldown of the next three non-instant, non-channeled Destruction spells by 30% after Conflagrate.

Chaos Bolt and Incinerate are excellent spells on which to consume the charges.

A common sequence is:

Conflagrate → Chaos Bolt → Incinerate → Incinerate.

The exact order changes according to Immolate duration and Chaos Bolt cooldown.

If Immolate must be refreshed immediately after Conflagrate, the faster Immolate cast can consume one Backdraft charge. This is acceptable when maintaining Immolate is required, but good timer management can often prevent unnecessary overlap.

Backdraft becomes especially powerful during Haste effects such as Bloodlust/Heroism or Hyperspeed Accelerators because several hard casts can be fitted into a short damage window.

Chaos Bolt

Chaos Bolt is the second major cooldown spell in the single-target priority.

Use it whenever available unless Immolate must first be restored or Conflagrate has immediate priority.

Its relatively short cooldown means delaying casts repeatedly can reduce the total number of Chaos Bolts used during an encounter.

Backdraft substantially reduces its cast time, so casting Chaos Bolt shortly after Conflagrate creates a very efficient burst sequence.

Chaos Bolt also has the special ability to bypass absorption effects, although this property is more relevant in PvP than normal raid encounters.

For PvE, its main importance is simply its high direct damage and frequent availability.

Incinerate

Incinerate is the primary filler.

Cast it whenever Immolate is active and both Conflagrate and Chaos Bolt are unavailable.

Glyph of Incinerate increases its damage by 5%, which provides large overall value because Incinerate occupies most of the open casting time in a single-target encounter.

Avoid interrupting an Incinerate that is almost complete simply because another spell has just come off cooldown. Finishing the cast and then returning to Conflagrate or Chaos Bolt normally preserves more damage than repeatedly canceling casts.

During Backdraft, Incinerate becomes considerably faster and allows several spells to fit into a short period.

Empowered Imp

Imp is the preferred pet for Destruction.

Empowered Imp increases the Imp's damage and causes every Firebolt critical strike to give the Warlock a buff that makes the next spell a guaranteed critical strike. The proc lasts eight seconds.

Because the proc affects the next eligible spell rather than a specific ability, continuous casting is important. Do not leave long gaps that allow Empowered Imp to expire unused.

Conflagrate, Chaos Bolt and Incinerate can all gain strong value from the proc naturally during the normal priority.

The Imp should remain on the target continuously. Losing the pet means losing both Firebolt damage and Empowered Imp procs.

Glyph of Imp vs Glyph of Immolate

Glyph of Imp increases the Imp's Firebolt damage by 20%.

Glyph of Immolate increases Immolate's periodic damage by 10%.

Both fit the Destruction playstyle, but they emphasize different parts of the damage profile.

Glyph of Imp becomes more attractive when the pet has excellent uptime and benefits from strong raid buffs and gear scaling.

Glyph of Immolate provides a direct increase to the Warlock's own DoT damage and does not depend on pet uptime.

Glyph of Conflagrate and Glyph of Incinerate remain the core choices around which this third slot is selected.

Pet management

Keep Firebolt on autocast and ensure the Imp begins attacking immediately when combat starts.

The pet should be positioned where encounter mechanics are unlikely to kill it. Because the Imp attacks from range, it can usually remain away from dangerous melee mechanics.

Move it manually when required instead of allowing avoidable pet deaths.

If the boss becomes temporarily unavailable, retarget the Imp after the transition rather than assuming it will always select the correct enemy automatically.

A dead Imp removes a meaningful source of damage and stops Empowered Imp from triggering.

Curses

Curse of Doom is the default personal-damage curse against a boss that will survive for at least another 60 seconds.

The spell only deals its damage when the duration completes, so do not reapply it when the boss is expected to die before the next Doom triggers.

If the remaining encounter duration is too short for Curse of Doom, Curse of Agony can provide damage more reliably.

Curse of the Elements takes priority whenever the raid does not already have the equivalent magic-damage debuff.

Raid utility is more valuable than gaining a small amount of personal damage from the preferred offensive curse.

Firestone and Fel Armor

Keep Fel Armor active at all times.

Fel Armor converts Spirit into Spell Power and provides a substantial passive offensive benefit.

Use Firestone on the weapon for the Destruction setup.

Check these buffs after deaths, wipes or equipment changes. Losing a weapon stone or Fel Armor for an entire attempt creates avoidable damage loss without affecting the rotation itself.

Replenishment and raid utility

Improved Soul Leech can provide Replenishment to the raid through the normal Destruction rotation.

Because Conflagrate and other core abilities are already being used regularly, this utility does not require maintaining a separate damage spell.

Destruction also provides Blood Pact through the Imp when the raid does not already have an equivalent stamina buff.

Soulstone should be assigned before difficult attempts rather than forgotten until a player has already died.

Healthstones remain valuable raid utility and should be distributed before pulls.

Movement

Destruction loses substantial damage while moving because Incinerate, Chaos Bolt and Immolate require cast time.

Plan positioning ahead of encounter mechanics whenever possible.

Conflagrate is instant and can be used during movement when available.

A curse can also be refreshed during movement if required.

Shadowflame provides instant damage when already close to the target, but moving into melee range solely to cast it is generally not worth the lost ranged casting time.

Demonic Circle is one of the strongest movement tools available. Place it before predictable mechanics so you can teleport directly to a safe position and resume casting immediately.

Nitro Boosts provide another way to minimize movement downtime.

Life Tap and Mana management

Life Tap converts health into Mana and prevents Destruction from depending on traditional Mana regeneration.

Use it before Mana becomes critically low.

Movement periods are excellent opportunities for Life Tap because casting it while stationary during an otherwise uninterrupted Incinerate sequence causes a larger damage loss.

Avoid Life Tapping immediately before predictable heavy raid damage unless Mana requires it.

Improved Soul Leech and Replenishment reduce Mana pressure, but long encounters can still require several taps.

The goal is to distribute them through low-value moments rather than spending several consecutive globals restoring Mana during a strong damage window.

AoE

Seed of Corruption is the primary repeatable ranged AoE option against large groups.

Place Seeds on targets that will receive enough damage to trigger the explosions quickly. Switching between targets prevents repeatedly overwriting a Seed that has not yet detonated.

Rain of Fire is useful when enemies remain stationary in a predictable area for its full channel.

Shadowfury provides instant AoE damage and a stun and is particularly useful for controlling dangerous adds.

Shadowflame can add close-range AoE when already positioned near the enemies.

Against only two or three targets with one important priority target, maintaining the normal Immolate, Conflagrate and Chaos Bolt priority on that target may provide more useful damage than abandoning it for pure AoE.

Cooldown and proc management

Destruction has fewer major class damage cooldowns than many other DPS specializations, which makes external and profession-based cooldown timing more important.

Hyperspeed Accelerators provide a strong temporary Haste window.

Potion of Speed adds another large Haste effect, while Potion of Wild Magic provides Spell Power and Critical Strike.

Use offensive effects during periods where you can continue casting without interruption.

Avoid activating them immediately before movement, boss immunity or a transition.

When Bloodlust/Heroism is active, maintain the normal priority rather than abandoning Conflagrate or Chaos Bolt to spam Incinerate exclusively.

Glyph effects

Glyph of Conflagrate prevents Conflagrate from consuming Immolate or Shadowflame. This is the most important glyph for maintaining the normal Destruction rotation.

Glyph of Incinerate increases Incinerate damage by 5%, strengthening the spell used for most filler casts.

Glyph of Immolate increases Immolate periodic damage by 10%.

Glyph of Imp increases the Imp's Firebolt damage by 20%.

The choice between Immolate and Imp changes whether the third slot emphasizes the Warlock's own periodic damage or the permanent pet's Firebolt damage.

Consumables and burst windows

Flask of the Frost Wyrm provides consistent Spell Power throughout the encounter.

Potion of Wild Magic gives Spell Power and Critical Strike and works well during periods of strong direct-damage casting.

Potion of Speed provides a large temporary Haste increase and allows faster Chaos Bolt and Incinerate casts.

Using a potion shortly before combat allows another potion later in the encounter.

Hyperspeed Accelerators provide an additional controllable Haste window.

Try to combine temporary offensive effects with periods of uninterrupted casting and strong boss uptime rather than activating them only because they are available.
