Elemental Shaman is a ranged caster built around Flame Shock, Lava Burst and Lightning Bolt, with Chain Lightning providing faster burst and strong cleave when Mana allows it. The specialization combines reliable spell damage with valuable raid utility through Totem of Wrath, Wrath of Air Totem, Bloodlust or Heroism and a large selection of encounter-specific totems.

Opener
- Cast Flame Shock.
- Cast Lava Burst.
- Start casting Lightning Bolt.
Priority
- Keep Flame Shock on the target (refresh after it falls).
- Cast Lava Burst on cooldown (it always crits on a Flame Shock target).
- Cast Chain Lightning on cooldown if it won’t desync your Lava Burst timing.
- Cast Lightning Bolt as your filler.
AoE
- Use Chain Lightning + Magma Totem (and Fire Nova if you’re using it) for 3+ targets.
Stats and gearing
Reach the spell Hit cap before prioritizing other offensive stats.
Against a level-83 raid boss, spells require 17% total Hit. With 3/3 Elemental Precision providing 3% Hit and Misery or Improved Faerie Fire providing another 3%, 11% Hit from gear is required, equal to approximately 289 Hit Rating.
A Draenei in the party reduces the requirement by another 1%, bringing the gear requirement to approximately 10%.
Spell Power is the primary throughput stat after Hit and should be increased as much as possible.
Haste is extremely strong because it reduces the cast time of Lightning Bolt, Chain Lightning and Lava Burst while also shortening the global cooldown. 1000+ Haste is a strong practical high-end target. Haste continues providing value beyond the point where the global cooldown reaches one second because Lightning Bolt has a longer base cast time and can still be shortened further.
2747 Haste represents a theoretical high-end hard-cap concept where Lightning Bolt itself approaches the one-second cast-time floor under specific permanent Haste assumptions. It should not be treated as a realistic gearing requirement.
Critical Strike remains useful because Elemental Fury causes offensive spell critical strikes to deal 200% damage instead of the normal 150%. Lava Burst already critically strikes automatically while Flame Shock is active, so additional Crit primarily improves Lightning Bolt, Chain Lightning, Flame Shock and other eligible spells. Around 48% Crit represents a high-end gearing reference rather than a required cap.
Single-target priority
Keep Flame Shock active on the target.
Cast Lava Burst whenever it is available while Flame Shock will still be active when Lava Burst is cast.
Use Chain Lightning selectively when its shorter cast and immediate damage can be used without delaying the next Lava Burst and when Mana allows it.
Use Lightning Bolt as the normal sustained filler.
The core priority is:
Flame Shock → Lava Burst → Chain Lightning when appropriate → Lightning Bolt.
Elemental is a priority-based specialization rather than a rigid repeating rotation. Haste changes the number of Lightning Bolts that can fit between Lava Burst casts, so the exact sequence naturally changes with gear and temporary Haste effects.
Flame Shock
Flame Shock should remain active whenever Lava Burst is being used.
Its most important interaction is with Lava Burst: if Flame Shock is active on the target when Lava Burst is cast, Lava Burst is guaranteed to critically strike.
Refresh Flame Shock after it expires rather than repeatedly clipping its remaining duration.
Because Flame Shock is instant, refreshing it is also one of the best ways to preserve damage during movement.
Do not refresh it simply because Lava Burst is almost ready if enough Flame Shock duration remains for the upcoming Lava Burst.
Maintaining correct Flame Shock timing prevents unnecessary global cooldowns and leaves more room for Lightning Bolt casts.
Lava Burst
Lava Burst is the highest-priority normal single-target cast.
Use it on cooldown whenever Flame Shock is active.
The guaranteed critical strike activates Elemental's crit-based talent interactions consistently and gives Lava Burst extremely reliable damage regardless of normal Critical Strike chance.
Do not delay Lava Burst to finish an unnecessary additional Lightning Bolt or Chain Lightning.
As Haste increases, learn how many Lightning Bolts fit between Lava Burst cooldowns. Forcing one extra filler cast that pushes Lava Burst back is normally worse than briefly adjusting the sequence so Lava Burst remains on schedule.
Glyph of Lava increases Lava Burst's Spell Power coefficient by an additional 10%, making it a direct single-target throughput option.
Lightning Bolt
Lightning Bolt is the primary sustained filler.
It is significantly more Mana-efficient than Chain Lightning and should occupy most available casting time between Flame Shock refreshes and Lava Burst cooldowns.
Glyph of Lightning Bolt increases its damage by 4%, which provides strong value because Lightning Bolt accounts for such a large share of normal single-target casts.
Haste has particularly high value for Lightning Bolt because its talented cast time remains longer than the one-second minimum global cooldown even after shorter Elemental spells begin reaching that floor.
This is also why Haste can remain useful beyond the global-cooldown soft cap.
During long fights, favoring Lightning Bolt over unnecessary Chain Lightning casts helps preserve Mana without changing the core damage priority.
Chain Lightning
Chain Lightning has a shorter cast time than Lightning Bolt and strong immediate damage.
Against a single target, it can provide higher short-term damage than another Lightning Bolt, but its Mana cost is substantially higher. For this reason, it should not automatically replace Lightning Bolt every time it becomes available during a long encounter.
Use Chain Lightning when:
Mana is comfortable.
The shorter cast fits cleanly before the next Lava Burst.
Additional targets can be struck.
A short burst window is more important than long-term Mana efficiency.
If Chain Lightning would push Lava Burst off schedule, prioritize Lava Burst.
During multi-target combat, Chain Lightning becomes much more valuable because its additional jumps convert the high Mana cost into meaningful cleave damage.
Elemental Mastery
Elemental Mastery makes the next Lightning Bolt, Chain Lightning or Lava Burst instant and also grants 15% spell Haste for 15 seconds.
Use it during a period where you can continue casting for most of the Haste window. The instant spell itself can help during movement, but spending the remaining 15 seconds running wastes the larger part of the cooldown.
A Lava Burst is a reliable instant-cast choice because Flame Shock guarantees the critical strike, while an instant Chain Lightning can be useful when immediate burst or cleave is required.
At high gear levels, Elemental Mastery can combine with Bloodlust/Heroism, Hyperspeed Accelerators and an offensive potion to produce extremely fast casts.
Watch the global cooldown during large Haste combinations. Lava Burst and Chain Lightning can reach the one-second floor much earlier than Lightning Bolt.
Totem of Wrath
Totem of Wrath provides 280 Spell Power to the raid and applies a 3% increased Critical Strike chance debuff to nearby enemies.
The Spell Power component does not stack with Demonic Pact. A sufficiently geared Demonology Warlock will normally provide the stronger Spell Power buff.
Even when Demonic Pact will replace the Spell Power aura, dropping Totem of Wrath at the beginning of the encounter remains useful.
It can strengthen the Warlock's first Demonic Pact application, and Glyph of Totem of Wrath grants the Shaman a personal Spell Power buff when the totem is cast.
Glyph of Totem of Wrath grants Spell Power equal to 30% of the totem's Spell Power bonus for five minutes. With the level-80 Totem of Wrath bonus, this produces an additional personal Spell Power buff that remains useful even if another Fire Totem is subsequently placed.
Searing Totem and Fire Elemental Totem
When Demonic Pact already supplies the raid's stronger Spell Power buff, Searing Totem can replace Totem of Wrath after the necessary opening setup and contribute additional personal damage.
Fire Elemental Totem provides a much larger temporary damage contribution and lasts for up to two minutes.
Use it when the boss will remain close enough for the Fire Elemental to attack for most of its duration. Its ten-minute cooldown makes encounter planning important.
Avoid summoning it immediately before a phase where the boss moves far away, becomes immune or disappears.
On encounters where Fire Elemental can remain active for most of its full duration, it represents a major offensive cooldown rather than ordinary totem maintenance.
Flametongue Weapon
Keep Flametongue Weapon active on the main weapon.
At level 80 it provides additional Spell Power, making it the standard weapon imbue for Elemental.
Glyph of Flametongue Weapon adds 2% spell Critical Strike chance while Flametongue Weapon is active.
This makes the glyph a reliable passive alternative to Glyph of Lava.
Check the weapon imbue after deaths, long breaks or equipment changes so an expired Flametongue Weapon does not remain unnoticed through an encounter.
Glyph of Lava vs Glyph of Flametongue Weapon
Glyph of Lava gives Lava Burst an additional 10% Spell Power coefficient.
Glyph of Flametongue Weapon provides 2% spell Critical Strike chance while Flametongue Weapon is active.
The choice changes which part of the damage profile is emphasized.
Glyph of Lava directly strengthens the guaranteed-critical Lava Burst.
Glyph of Flametongue Weapon spreads its benefit across Lightning Bolt, Chain Lightning, Flame Shock and other spells capable of benefiting from additional Crit.
Both can be used with the core Glyph of Lightning Bolt and Glyph of Totem of Wrath setup.
Clearcasting and Mana efficiency
Elemental Focus causes spell critical strikes to activate Clearcasting, reducing the Mana cost of subsequent damaging spells.
Lava Burst's guaranteed critical strike makes Clearcasting activation extremely reliable during the normal priority.
This contributes significantly to Elemental's ability to sustain Lightning Bolt casting over long encounters.
High-Mana abilities such as Chain Lightning still require judgment. Clearcasting improves their efficiency, but repeatedly forcing Chain Lightning into every cooldown can still create unnecessary Mana pressure.
Treat Mana as a resource that should be converted into damage when encounter length allows it rather than something that must always remain near full.
Thunderstorm
Thunderstorm restores Mana and deals instant Nature damage around the Shaman.
For raid PvE, its Mana restoration is normally the more important single-target function. Wowhead specifically recommends it during longer encounters when Mana becomes an issue.
Because Thunderstorm is instant, it can also provide some damage while moving if the Shaman is close enough to the target.
Its knockback can be dangerous on trash or add encounters if enemies need to remain grouped.
Glyph of Thunderstorm removes the knockback and increases Mana restoration, making Thunderstorm considerably easier to use as a PvE Mana tool.
Water Shield
Keep Water Shield active during combat.
It provides passive Mana regeneration and can return additional Mana when charges are triggered.
Elemental normally spends most of the encounter continuously casting, so passive in-combat Mana sources are more useful than Spirit-based regeneration.
Check Water Shield after deaths or mechanics that remove buffs.
Maintaining it is particularly important during long fights where Chain Lightning, Fire Nova or frequent movement abilities increase Mana consumption.
Movement
Movement primarily costs Lightning Bolt and Lava Burst casts, so positioning should be planned before mechanics begin.
Use Flame Shock while moving when it needs refreshing.
Frost Shock can provide instant damage when Flame Shock does not need attention and no stronger instant option is available. Wowhead specifically lists Frost Shock as the movement option after Flame Shock.
Elemental Mastery can make the next Lightning Bolt, Chain Lightning or Lava Burst instant, but use this carefully because the following 15% Haste window is best spent standing still and casting.
Thunderstorm and Fire Nova can also be used while moving when their range and encounter conditions make them appropriate.
Nitro Boosts reduce the total time spent repositioning and allow normal Lightning Bolt casting to resume sooner.
AoE
Against several enemies, Chain Lightning becomes one of the highest-priority spells.
Use Magma Totem when the enemies will remain close enough to the totem.
Fire Nova then becomes a powerful repeatable AoE ability because it explodes from the active Fire Totem.
A practical AoE priority is:
Magma Totem → Fire Nova → Chain Lightning → Flame Shock and Lava Burst on priority targets → Lightning Bolt filler.
Fire Elemental Totem also contributes substantial AoE when enemies remain close to it.
Do not run into melee range to maintain Magma Totem when encounter mechanics make doing so dangerous. In those situations, ranged Chain Lightning and priority-target damage are more valuable than risking death for additional AoE.
Totem management
Totem selection should change according to raid composition.
Wrath of Air Totem provides 5% spell Haste and is one of Elemental's most important caster raid buffs.
Totem of Wrath provides Spell Power and the critical-strike debuff when those effects are not already covered.
Stoneskin Totem can provide Armor when the equivalent effect is missing.
Healing Stream Totem contributes passive party healing, while Mana Spring Totem can provide Mana regeneration if the equivalent effect is not already present.
Do not automatically use the same four totems in every raid. Duplicate buffs provide little value, so the optimal set depends on which effects other players already supply.
Reposition totems when the raid moves outside their effective range.
Bloodlust and Heroism
Bloodlust or Heroism provides one of the strongest raid-wide burst windows in WotLK.
Use it according to the raid's planned strategy rather than simply for personal cooldown alignment.
Elemental benefits greatly because Haste increases the number of Lightning Bolt casts available during the effect.
The best window is normally one where the boss can be attacked continuously and the rest of the raid can also use offensive cooldowns.
At very high Haste, Chain Lightning and Lava Burst can become constrained by the one-second global cooldown while Lightning Bolt can continue benefiting from additional casting speed for longer.
Wind Shear and raid utility
Wind Shear is a ranged interrupt with a very short cooldown and is not on the normal global cooldown.
This allows an Elemental Shaman to interrupt dangerous casts with minimal disruption to the damage priority.
Tremor Totem provides repeated Fear removal for the party.
Cleansing Totem can repeatedly remove diseases and poisons.
Purge removes beneficial magical effects from enemies.
These abilities make Elemental valuable on encounters where controlling enemy abilities matters as much as raw damage.
Glyph effects
Glyph of Totem of Wrath grants a personal Spell Power buff equal to 30% of Totem of Wrath's Spell Power bonus for five minutes after the totem is cast.
Glyph of Lightning Bolt increases Lightning Bolt damage by 4%, strengthening the primary sustained filler.
Glyph of Lava adds another 10% of Spell Power to Lava Burst's scaling.
Glyph of Flametongue Weapon instead provides 2% spell Critical Strike chance while Flametongue Weapon is active.
The first two glyphs directly reinforce Elemental's sustained casting and personal Spell Power, while the final slot can emphasize stronger Lava Burst scaling or broader Critical Strike value.
Consumables and cooldown timing
Flask of the Frost Wyrm provides consistent Spell Power throughout the encounter.
Potion of Wild Magic provides Spell Power and Critical Strike and works well during a strong opening or another controlled burst window.
Potion of Speed provides a large temporary Haste increase and can produce very fast Lightning Bolt casts.
Using an offensive potion immediately before combat allows another potion later in the encounter. Wowhead recommends both Potion of Speed and Potion of Wild Magic as Elemental options.
Hyperspeed Accelerators provide another controllable Haste window.
When several Haste effects overlap, remember that Lava Burst and Chain Lightning can reach the one-second cast/GCD floor before Lightning Bolt. Temporary Haste is most valuable when the entire window can be spent actively casting rather than moving or waiting for the target to become available.
