Enhancement Shaman is a hybrid melee DPS specialization that combines weapon attacks with Nature and Fire spells. Its gameplay revolves around Stormstrike, Maelstrom Weapon, shocks, Lightning Shield and fire totems while maintaining constant melee uptime. Strong play requires more than simply pressing abilities on cooldown because Maelstrom Weapon stacks, weapon swing timing and the Stormstrike debuff can all change the next best action.

11. Rotation
Pre-pull
- Drop totems before pull (your usual air/earth/water).
- Pop Feral Spirit on pull.
Opener
- Fire totem choice:
- Fire Elemental Totem if the boss will live long enough and you can keep it hitting.
- Otherwise use Magma Totem.
- Use your burst buffs
- Pre-pull: keep Lightning Shield up.
- Start with Flame Shock while running in, then Stormstrike → Lava Lash.
Priority
- At 5 stacks of Maelstrom Weapon: cast Lightning Bolt or Chain Lightning for multiple targets.
- Keep Magma Totem down and refresh it on cooldown.
- Use Stormstrike and Lava Lash on cooldown; if you are about to hit 5 Maelstrom stacks, spend the Lightning Bolt first.
- Keep Flame Shock on the target; otherwise use Earth Shock.
- Refresh Lightning Shield when charges are low; use Fire Nova only if everything else is on cooldown and your fire totem is active.
Stats and gearing
The base melee special-attack Hit cap against a level-83 raid boss is 8%, or approximately 263 Hit Rating before talents and racial bonuses are considered.
Enhancement also deals a large amount of spell damage through Lightning Bolt, Chain Lightning, shocks and Fire Nova. Spells require 17% total Hit against a raid boss. With Misery or Improved Faerie Fire supplying 3% spell Hit, 14% from your own character is enough, equal to approximately 368 Hit Rating before other personal Hit bonuses are considered.
26 Expertise is the dodge soft cap. Enhancement normally attacks from behind, so reaching 26 Expertise removes boss dodges while positioning prevents normal parries.
Attack Power is particularly valuable because it improves melee damage and also converts into Spell Power through Mental Quickness. Ten Attack Power provides three Spell Power with the full talent, allowing physical gearing to strengthen Lightning Bolt, shocks and Fire Nova at the same time.
Haste is a powerful late-game stat because it increases melee swing frequency, which means more Windfury opportunities, more Maelstrom Weapon generation and better Flurry interaction.
Around 51% Critical Strike provides strong high-end scaling through Flurry, Elemental Devastation and Maelstrom generation.
Armor Penetration can appear naturally on strong melee gear, but it should not be treated as a primary cap. A substantial portion of Enhancement damage is magical and receives no benefit from Armor Penetration.
The 2000+ Spell Power value is a useful high-end reference, but it does not mean a physical Enhancement setup should automatically gem Spell Power. Mental Quickness already converts Attack Power into substantial Spell Power.
Weapon setup
Use two slow one-handed weapons whenever the physical Enhancement setup allows it.
Stormstrike is not normalized, so slower weapons produce stronger Stormstrike hits. Matching or closely matching weapon speeds also helps keep main-hand and off-hand swings synchronized, which improves Flurry efficiency and makes advanced Maelstrom weaving easier.
For the late-game physical setup, use:
Main hand — Windfury Weapon
Off hand — Flametongue Weapon.
Windfury provides strong physical burst from the main hand, while Flametongue supports Lava Lash and adds spell-based damage from the off hand.
Keep both weapon imbues active at all times and refresh them before the pull rather than allowing them to expire during combat.
Single-target priority
Enhancement uses a priority system rather than a fixed repeating rotation.
A practical single-target priority is:
Fire Elemental Totem when appropriate → Feral Spirit → Maelstrom Weapon Lightning Bolt → Stormstrike → Flame Shock maintenance → Magma Totem → Lightning Shield → Earth Shock → Fire Nova → Lava Lash.
At five Maelstrom Weapon stacks, spend the proc immediately on Lightning Bolt before generating additional stacks.
Keep Stormstrike cycling because it deals strong weapon damage and increases the next four sources of Nature damage you deal to the target.
Maintain Flame Shock, use Earth Shock when Flame Shock is already active, keep Lightning Shield available for Static Shock and maintain the appropriate Fire Totem.
Lava Lash is a low-priority filler rather than one of the abilities that must always be pressed immediately when its cooldown ends.
Maelstrom Weapon
Maelstrom Weapon is the central mechanic connecting Enhancement's melee and spell damage.
Melee attacks generate stacks, with each stack reducing the cast time of eligible spells by 20%.
At five stacks, Lightning Bolt or Chain Lightning becomes instant.
For safe, consistent play, spend five stacks immediately:
5 Maelstrom stacks → Lightning Bolt on one target
5 Maelstrom stacks → Chain Lightning when additional targets can be hit.
Do not remain at five stacks while continuing to use melee abilities unnecessarily. Additional Maelstrom opportunities are wasted while already capped.
Lightning weaving
Advanced Enhancement gameplay can use Maelstrom Weapon before reaching five stacks.
With three or four stacks, Lightning Bolt has a short remaining cast time. If that cast can finish completely between weapon swings, it can be inserted without delaying the next melee attack.
This technique is commonly called Lightning Weaving.
A successful three- or four-stack Lightning Bolt increases DPS because Maelstrom stacks are converted into spell damage sooner while melee uptime remains unchanged.
A failed weave is a DPS loss because finishing the spell after the next weapon swing should have occurred delays the white attack.
For this reason:
Use five-stack Lightning Bolt as the reliable default.
Use three- or four-stack Lightning Bolt only when the cast clearly fits between synchronized weapon swings.
Swing-timer tracking is extremely useful for this technique.
Stormstrike
Stormstrike instantly attacks with both weapons.
It also causes the next four sources of Nature damage dealt by the Shaman to the target to deal 20% additional damage for 12 seconds.
This strengthens Lightning Bolt, Chain Lightning, Earth Shock and Lightning Shield damage.
Glyph of Stormstrike increases the Nature-damage bonus by another 8%, taking the bonus from 20% to 28%.
Use Stormstrike frequently and avoid leaving the debuff absent during normal melee uptime.
When a five-stack Maelstrom Weapon proc is already available, spend it before pressing another ability that could generate additional Maelstrom stacks.
Flame Shock and Earth Shock
Keep Flame Shock active during sustained single-target combat.
Allow the existing Flame Shock to run for its useful duration rather than continuously clipping it.
When Flame Shock is already active and does not require refreshing, Earth Shock becomes the normal damaging shock.
Stormstrike increases Nature damage, so Earth Shock benefits from the Stormstrike debuff while Flame Shock does not.
For this reason, an Earth Shock cast following Stormstrike can provide particularly strong value when higher-priority abilities are not available.
Because shocks share a cooldown, refreshing Flame Shock unnecessarily also delays the next Earth Shock.
Lightning Shield
Keep Lightning Shield active throughout combat.
Static Shock allows melee attacks to trigger Lightning Shield charges against the target even when the Shaman is not personally being attacked.
This turns Lightning Shield into a passive DPS source during ordinary raid combat.
Refresh it when charges become low, but avoid spending a global on the refresh while a five-stack Maelstrom Weapon proc or another higher-priority attack is waiting.
Stormstrike also increases the Nature damage dealt by Lightning Shield charges.
Lava Lash
Lava Lash is an off-hand weapon attack and gains additional value from Flametongue Weapon.
However, in WotLK its damage is relatively low compared with Maelstrom Weapon, Stormstrike, shocks and Fire Nova.
Use it when the higher-priority parts of the rotation are already handled.
Do not delay a Maelstrom Weapon cast, Stormstrike, required Flame Shock refresh or another stronger action simply because Lava Lash has come off cooldown.
Magma Totem and Fire Nova
Magma Totem provides sustained close-range Fire damage and should remain close enough to the boss or enemies to hit them.
Fire Nova deals AoE Fire damage around your active Fire Totem.
On a single target, Fire Nova is useful when higher-priority actions are unavailable.
Against several targets, its priority rises dramatically and it should be used much more aggressively.
Fire Nova can become one of Enhancement's strongest AoE tools because it damages every valid enemy around the Fire Totem.
Position Magma Totem carefully. A perfectly timed Fire Nova does no damage if the active Fire Totem is too far away from the enemies.
Fire Elemental Totem
Fire Elemental Totem is a major damage cooldown when the elemental can remain on the boss for most of its duration.
Use it on long-lived targets where movement or immunity phases will not immediately make the elemental useless.
Fire Elemental occupies the Fire Totem slot, so Magma Totem and Fire Nova usage must be adjusted while it is active.
Because of its long cooldown, encounter timing matters more than simply using it as soon as combat starts.
A long stationary boss phase is usually more valuable than summoning the elemental immediately before the target moves or disappears.
Feral Spirit
Feral Spirit summons two Spirit Wolves that contribute substantial damage and provide useful mobility and self-healing.
Use the wolves when they will be able to attack for most of their active duration.
Glyph of Feral Spirit increases the amount of your Attack Power inherited by the wolves by another 30%, making Attack Power particularly valuable during the cooldown.
Spirit Walk provides a strong movement-speed increase and can remove roots, making the wolves useful for maintaining melee uptime as well as raw damage.
Do not summon them immediately before a boss becomes untargetable or moves somewhere they cannot reach.
Shamanistic Rage
Shamanistic Rage serves both as a defensive cooldown and a Mana tool.
Use it regularly rather than waiting until the Mana bar is almost empty.
Its short cooldown means it can usually be activated several times during a raid encounter, and the Mana recovery scales naturally with Enhancement's Attack Power-focused gearing.
It is also useful before predictable raid damage because of its defensive component.
Avoid losing damage because Mana reached zero while Shamanistic Rage had been available for a long period.
Feral Spirit and Bloodlust/Heroism
Feral Spirit benefits strongly from a high-damage raid window.
When encounter strategy allows it, summon the wolves before Bloodlust or Heroism so they can attack throughout the Haste window.
Bloodlust/Heroism also increases the Shaman's melee attack speed, producing more auto-attacks and therefore more Maelstrom Weapon opportunities.
The increased speed makes reaction time more important because five Maelstrom stacks can arrive very quickly.
During Bloodlust/Heroism, avoid sitting at five stacks and wasting further Maelstrom generation.
Unleashed Rage
Unleashed Rage provides both personal and raid value.
At full rank it grants the Shaman 9 Expertise and provides a 10% Attack Power raid buff.
The Attack Power buff does not stack with equivalent effects such as Trueshot Aura or Abomination's Might.
The Expertise from Unleashed Rage should be included when evaluating the 26 Expertise soft cap. The goal is 26 total Expertise after talents, racial bonuses and gear rather than necessarily collecting all 26 points directly from equipment.
AoE
Enhancement has extremely strong sustained AoE when enemies remain near the Fire Totem.
A practical priority is:
Fire Elemental Totem when appropriate → Feral Spirit → Magma Totem → Fire Nova → Maelstrom Weapon Chain Lightning → Stormstrike → shocks → Lava Lash.
Use Chain Lightning instead of Lightning Bolt when multiple enemies can be hit.
Keep Magma Totem positioned inside the pack and use Fire Nova aggressively.
Fire Nova rises far above Lava Lash in multi-target situations.
Avoid spending globals building a full single-target setup on enemies that will die before the effects can provide meaningful damage.
Movement
Enhancement loses damage rapidly when forced outside melee range because auto-attacks stop, Maelstrom Weapon generation slows and weapon procs disappear.
Use Spirit Walk when the wolves are active to reconnect quickly.
Nitro Boosts provide another powerful mobility tool.
While temporarily outside melee range, Flame Shock, Earth Shock or an available Maelstrom Weapon spell can continue producing damage.
Do not hard-cast a low-stack Lightning Bolt while moving into the boss if simply reaching melee range faster would restore more total damage.
Efficient positioning is particularly important because every missed melee swing can also mean a missed Windfury, Maelstrom or Static Shock opportunity.
Wind Shear and raid utility
Wind Shear provides a short-cooldown ranged interrupt.
It is one of Enhancement's strongest utility tools because important enemy casts can be interrupted with minimal disruption to the normal melee priority.
Purge removes beneficial magical effects from enemies.
Tremor Totem can counter Fear mechanics.
Cleansing and resistance totems can be adjusted according to encounter requirements.
Enhancement also brings Bloodlust or Heroism and Unleashed Rage, giving the specialization significant raid value even before personal damage is considered.
Totem management
Totems should be chosen according to raid composition rather than using one fixed set regardless of which buffs are already covered.
Strength of Earth Totem provides Strength and Agility when an equivalent buff is unavailable.
Windfury Totem provides melee Haste when the equivalent effect is not already supplied.
Healing Stream Totem adds passive party healing, while other Water Totems can be selected for encounter-specific utility.
Magma Totem is normally the offensive Fire Totem when Fire Elemental is not active.
Reposition totems when the raid or boss moves outside their effective range.
Glyph effects
Glyph of Feral Spirit causes Spirit Wolves to gain an additional 30% of the Shaman's Attack Power.
Glyph of Windfury Weapon increases Windfury Weapon's proc chance by 2%.
Glyph of Stormstrike increases the Nature-damage bonus provided by Stormstrike by another 8%, strengthening Lightning Bolt, Chain Lightning, Earth Shock and Lightning Shield damage.
These three glyphs fit a physical, late-game Enhancement setup focused on Windfury, strong weapons and Feral Spirit burst.
Consumables and cooldown timing
Flask of Endless Rage provides consistent Attack Power, which improves physical damage while also converting into Spell Power through Mental Quickness.
Fish Feast is a practical general raid food, while Blackened Dragonfin provides additional Agility.
Potion of Speed can be used shortly before the pull so another potion becomes available during combat.
Use the second Potion of Speed during uninterrupted melee uptime, preferably alongside Feral Spirit, strong trinket procs or another offensive window.
Hyperspeed Accelerators provide another temporary Haste increase.
Large Haste windows increase melee swing frequency and Maelstrom Weapon generation, so watch the stack counter carefully and avoid wasting five-stack procs.
